What this site is

SoundProofTest is the editorial and educational companion to the QuietScore iOS app. The app gives you a Sound Isolation Score for a door or window in about 60 seconds. This site explains the underlying topic — how sound transmission works, what STC ratings mean, how to test soundproofing without a lab, and which materials and tools actually help.

The two projects share a single goal: make practical acoustic testing approachable for people who aren't acoustic engineers.

Who runs it

QuietScore and SoundProofTest are built by a small independent team. We're not an acoustic consulting firm, a building products vendor, or a soundproofing contractor — which means we don't have a commercial interest in steering you toward any specific brand of material or service. The guides here reflect what we've found while building and testing the app.

How guides are written

Every guide on this site is built around three things: (1) the underlying physics or measurement protocol, (2) what actually works in a normal home or office, and (3) what we've observed running thousands of measurements with QuietScore across different barrier types. We cite measurement standards (ASTM E336, E966, ISO 717-1) where they apply, and we're explicit when something is a practical estimate versus a certified lab figure.

We don't accept paid placements, sponsored sections, or guest posts. If we recommend a product, it's because we've tested it or it has a strong reputation among practitioners we respect.

Some pages on this site contain affiliate links — usually to retailers like Amazon, Sweetwater, and a few specialty soundproofing suppliers. If you click one of those links and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. This is one of the ways we fund the time we spend writing and updating the guides.

Affiliate relationships never influence which products we recommend or where they rank in our roundups. If a product we'd otherwise recommend isn't available through an affiliate program, we still recommend it — we just won't earn from a click. Several products we recommend (such as some boutique acoustic doors and DIY soundproofing methods) generate zero commission for us.

Editorial corrections

If you spot something inaccurate — a wrong STC value, an outdated product link, a flawed measurement claim — please tell us. We'll fix it, and we'll note significant corrections at the bottom of the affected article.
